The Golden City of Jaisalmer has an interesting legend
connected with its formation. Lord Krishna, the head
of the Yadav Clan, told Arjuna that a descendent of
the Yadav Clan would set up his kingdom on the top of
the Trikuta Hill. His prediction was fulfilled in 1156
AD when Rawal Jaisal, a descendent of the Yadav Clan,
dumped his fort at Lodurva and established a new capital
called Jaisalmer on the Trikuta Hill.
One of the last princely forts in the region, Jaisalmer
is the hub of wealthy merchants engaged in stone crafting
who do their work with great fragility.
Jaisalmer fort was built in 1156 and is the second
oldest in Rajasthan. Two hundred and fifty feet tall
and strengthened by imposing castled sandstone, it has
99 bastions. Wells within the fort still provide a regular
source of water.
Located in the middle of the Thar Desert it rises
like a mirage from the sands. Raja Jaisal, who was searching
for a new capital, constructed it. He built the fort
and the city surrounding it, thus fulfilling Lord Krishna's
divination in the Mahabharata
