Travel to Jaisalmer Fort

One of the last princely forts in the region, Jaisalmer is the hub of wealthy merchants engaged in stone crafting who do their work with great fragility.

Jaisalmer fort was built in 1156 and is the second oldest in Rajasthan. Two hundred and fifty feet tall and strengthened by imposing castled sandstone, it has 99 bastions. Wells within the fort still provide a regular source of water.

Located in the middle of the Thar Desert it rises like a mirage from the sands. Raja Jaisal, who was searching for a new capital, constructed it. He built the fort and the city surrounding it, thus fulfilling Lord Krishna's divination in the Mahabharata

The view of the 99 bastions of the yellow sandstone fort is spectacular.
In front of the Chauhata Square lie the palaces of the Maharawals. Leading up to them is a flight of marble steps. Nearby lies the five-storeyed metal tower, with ornamented architecture and Bengali-style roofs. Muslim craftsmen who worked on the building constructed the five-tiered structure. A high wall strengthens the outer defenses of the citadel with a path running parallel to the first wall.

There was a time when everyone lived inside the fort itself. As the population of Jaisalmer expanded, people started emigrating from within the fort's district. Even today the fort is a nest of activity, and one can witness a section of the public living within it as you travel through its winding streets and alleys.

The fort has a peculiar gadget hoisted on top of its walls. This was used to forecast the weather. Every year in April a flag would be placed in its center and the direction in which it blew decided the weather for the entire.

Jaisalmer fort by nightfall is a sight to behold. Jaisalmer fort is one of the marvels of Rajasthani architecture, particularly of the stone-carver's art

Jaisalmer is a medieval fortress town because it was located on the caravan routes between Egypt, Arabia, Persia and India.. After the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, this remote desert area became a military area and an area of camels, sheep and cattle.
