Other Tourist Attractions of Jaisalmer

The Golden City of Jaisalmer has an interesting legend connected with its formation. Lord Krishna, the head of the Yadav Clan, told Arjuna that a descendent of the Yadav Clan would set up his kingdom on the top of the Trikuta Hill. His prediction was fulfilled in 1156 AD when Rawal Jaisal, a descendent of the Yadav Clan, dumped his fort at Lodurva and established a new capital called Jaisalmer on the Trikuta Hill.

Jaisalmer has a splendid history and a cultural heritage, which is now reflected in its ethnic cuisine, textiles and festivals.

The tourist attractions in Jaisalmer are the wonderful forts, beautiful temples and the havelis. Jaisalmer Fort is popularly known as the Golden Fort because of its mesmerizing orange hue.

From Manek Chowk, the main market place one can walk into the lanes where the carved havelis like Patwon-Ki-Haveli, Salim Sing ki-Haveli, Nathmalji-ki-Haveli are situated. The Havelis of Jaisalmer are fascinating with the intricate fretwork. The havelis like the Patwon-ki-Haveli and Salim-Singh-ki-Haveli are notable for their exclusive cutwork, yellow and red stone treatment and the bracket-shaped decoration of peacocks.

In Jaisalmer the oldest Jain Temple is the Parswanath Temple having brilliant carvings of animals and human figures.

Other attractions in Jaisalmer include the Gadsisar Sagar Tank. A number of migratory birds flock to Gadsisar place during the winters. Boating facilties are available on Gadsisar Lake.

the Desert Culture Center and Museum is a place that would give one can insight into the place. The museum displays a collection of old coins, different kinds of textile, traditional Rajasthani instruments, and some fossils that were found in the desert.

Khuri, is another place in this golden sands which impresses the tourists with its mud houses and straw roofs.

Lodhruva was the former capital of the erstwhile Rajput dynasty, Lodhurva is also an important Jain pilgrimage center.

The most famous of the festivals in Jaisalmer is the camel fair, also known as the desert fair. Held during the winter season of the year, it is marked by camel dances, camel races, folk dance and music.
