The city of Jodhpur was once the capital of the Marwar
state. Rao Jodha was the chief of the Rathore tribe
of Rajputs, who founded it in 1459 AD. The place is
an intriguing tourists destination for the Mehrangarh
Fort, built around the 15th century. The huge fort on
the top of a hill stands at a height of 125 m above
the plains. A high wall -10 km long with 8 gates and
innumerable citadels encloses the city.
Situated on a vertical hill, Mehrangarh Fort is one
of the largest forts in India. The fort has been a witness
to the majesty of a foregone era. The grandeur of numerous
palaces in the fort narrates an account of the delicate
work of skilled Jodhpuri sculptures. To enter the Mehrangarh
fort, seven gates have to be passed.
The Mehrangarh Fort walls in many palaces, which are
known for their intricate carvings and sprawling courtyards.
Moti Mahal or the Pearl Palace has a gracefully carved
stone screen and reserves the Sringar Chowki, which
is the royal throne of Jodhpur.
Umaid Villas displays the Rajput miniature paintings
and Ajit Villas displays musical instruments and royal
costumes. A beautiful mirror room joins both these villas.
The Jodhpur Coat of Arms is reserved in the Phool Mahal.
Walls of this Palace are covered with paintings depicting
various musical moods.
The tent room is an imperial Mughal campaign tent,
used by Shahjahan but seized by Jaswant Singh from Aurangzeb
in a battle. Made of red velvet and embroidered with
gold thread, it reflects the grandeur with which the
Mughals approached even their battles.
The fort is situated about 400-ft above the city. The
various palaces and buildings inside the fort now serve
as Mehrangarh museum.
The Moti Mahal has stained glass windows that create
a colorful montage. The Chandan Mahal, Darbar Takhat
or Throne Room, Rang Mahal and Umaid Vilas are must
see for tourists.
In the middle of the Umaid Vilas, a museum houses a
prosperous collection of armory, textile, local arts
and crafts, and miniature paintings. Umaid Vilas houses
a zoo and public library. This building and the garden
were developed during the time of Maharaj Umaid Singhji.
