Ranakpur is one of the five most important pilgrimage
sites of Jainism. It is an abode to the beautiful temple
compound in the Aravali ranges. It is one of the frequently
visited places in Rajasthan. It is situated around 60
km north of Udaipur in Pali.
Ranakpur is named after Rana Kumbha to whom a Jain
businessman, approached to ask for the land for the
temple construction. It is renowned for some splendidly
carved Jain temples in amber stone. Located at a distance
of around 60 km from Udaipur, these temples were constructed
in the AD 1439.
The entire temple area is enclosed within a wall. The
main 'Chamukha' temple is dedicated to the trithankara
Rishabdeoji and a four-faced image is shrined on the
inner wall of the temple, which is open on all four
sides.
There are four shrines, twenty-four halls and eight
domes backed by four hundred columns. The total number
of columns is 1,444, which are intricately carved, and
are unique.
A corridor around the shrine has the tirthankara images.
A small shrine dedicated to Prashvanath faces the main
temple. It has a black image of the tirthankara in the
inner chamber.
There are images of Adinath in the northwest, Parshvanath
in the northeast, Ajitnath in the south-east and Lord
Mahavir Swami in the south west. The artistically carved
angels playing the flute in various dance postures is
an absorbing sight. In the meeting hall, there are two
big bells weighing 108 kg's whose sound echoes in the
entire complex.
