Ranakpur is named after Rana Kumbha to whom a Jain
businessman, approached to ask for the land for the
temple construction. It is renowned for some splendidly
carved Jain temples in amber stone. Located at a distance
of around 60 km from Udaipur, these temples were constructed
in the AD 1439.
Dedicated to Lord Adinath, the first of Jain Saints,
the major Ranakpur Jain Temple took over 50 years to
make.
The Ranakpur Jain Temple was built during the reign
of the Rajput monarch Rana Kumbha in the 15th century.
The basement covers the whole complex. There are four
shrines, twenty-four halls and domes backed by over
four hundred columns. The artistically carved fairy
playing the flute is an interesting sight. In the assembly
hall, there are two big bells, whose sound echoes in
the entire complex.
Sadri is well known for some beautiful temples and
an old Dargah of Khudabaksh Baba. The Varahavtar
temple and the Chintamani Parsvanath Temple
are the oldest temples situated here.
An old mosque situated in Ranakpur is also worth a
visit. A temple dedicated to Parsuram Mahadeo,
placed in the hills, is close by.
Most distinguished is the temple of Gajanand
with a statue of the goddesses Riddhi and Siddhi. The
statue in the main shrine is guarded by idols of Hanuman
and Bhairon on either side.
Kumbhalgarh is around 30 km north east of Ranakpur.
It is a significant fort in the Mewar region after Chittorgarh.
Other important place to visit in Kumbhalgarh is Wildlife
Sanctuary known for its wolves.
The Muchhal Mahavir temple is situated in the Kumbhalgarh
Sanctuary. Its distinct feature is the statue of Lord
Mahavira with a mustache. In the surrounding area are
the Garasia tribal villages famous for their colorful
costumes.
The Jain Golden Temple in Falna, which is a
small town in Rajasthan, has a unique hold worldwide.
It is the first temple that has been constructed by
the group of the Jain community.
